Rainbow Color Order — ROYGBIV Guide

Memory device: ROY G. BIV — a name made from the first letter of each color. Children who learn this at age 5 typically remember it for life.

Practical Coloring Tips

  • Markers between bands: Let each band dry 10–15 seconds before coloring the adjacent one. Rainbow pages are the one coloring subject where marker bleed genuinely ruins the result — the colors mix at the border and create a muddy brown stripe.
  • Indigo is the hard one: Most children cannot distinguish indigo from blue and violet on either side of it. Using a blue-violet pencil lightly is more effective than trying to find a “true” indigo — the band reads correctly from a distance.
  • For teachers: Laminate one fully colored reference page and keep it visible during the activity. Children self-correct their color order far more reliably when there is a physical reference beside them rather than a verbal instruction.

Non-Traditional Rainbow Palettes

Realistic ROYGBIV is not the only option — these three alternative palettes work well on any of the pages in this collection:

  • Pastel rainbow: Blush pink, peach, pale yellow, mint, baby blue, soft lavender, pale lilac — dreamy and gentle, best on kawaii pages
  • Sunset rainbow: Deep coral, burnt orange, amber gold, rose, dusty mauve, warm violet — striking and unexpected
  • Galaxy rainbow: Jewel tones on a dark or black background — burgundy, burnt orange, teal, royal blue, deep purple — best on mandala or abstract pages where the background can also be colored dark

6 Rainbow Facts That Make Coloring More Meaningful

  1. Rainbows are full circles, not arcs: The arc shape is an illusion created by the ground cutting off the bottom half. From an airplane above rain, the full circular rainbow is visible. The sun must be directly behind you for either version to appear — which is why rainbows are never visible at midday when the sun is overhead.
  2. No two people see the same rainbow: A rainbow is an optical effect generated by the specific raindrops at the right angle between your eye and the sun. The person standing next to you is seeing light from entirely different raindrops — technically a different rainbow. There is no physical object in the sky at all.
  3. Double rainbows have reversed colors: When light reflects twice inside a raindrop, a second fainter rainbow appears above the first — with its colors in reverse order (violet outside, red inside). The dark band of sky between the two arcs is called Alexander’s Dark Band, named after the Greek philosopher who first described it in 200 AD.
  4. Isaac Newton invented ROYGBIV — and it might be wrong: Newton originally identified five colors in the spectrum. He later added orange and indigo to make seven — because he believed colors should correspond to the seven notes of a musical scale. Many modern scientists argue indigo is not a distinct color band and that the human eye cannot meaningfully separate it from blue and violet.
  5. Moonbows exist but appear white: On nights with a full moon and falling rain, moonlight can create a rainbow called a moonbow. They are real but extremely rare, and because moonlight is too dim to trigger the eye’s color-sensitive cells, moonbows appear almost entirely white to most observers — though long-exposure photography reveals the full color spectrum.
  6. The end of a rainbow is genuinely unreachable — mathematically: The rainbow moves with the observer at exactly the same angular distance at all times. This is not folklore — it is geometry. No matter how far you travel toward a rainbow, it maintains the same apparent position relative to your eye. The pot of gold myth works as a metaphor specifically because it describes something that is provably impossible to reach.

How to Use Rainbow Coloring Pages Beyond Just Coloring

ROYGBIV Learning Activity (Ages 3–6)

Print seven copies of the simplest arc page. Color one entirely in each rainbow color — one red page, one orange, one yellow, and so on. Cut out the arcs and stack them in order. The child has learned the color sequence through making rather than memorizing.

St. Patrick’s Day Leprechaun Trap (Ages 4–8)

A genuinely popular classroom activity that works well with the St. Patrick’s Day rainbow pages — color the rainbow page, cut it out, and attach it to a decorated shoebox with a small hole in the lid. The rainbow is meant to attract the leprechaun into the trap. It sounds silly but generates high engagement because children invest in it as a story rather than a craft.

Weather Science Journal Cover (Ages 6–12)

For children doing a weather or science unit, a colored rainbow page makes a meaningful personalized journal cover — particularly because the rainbow connects directly to what they are studying (light refraction, the water cycle, weather patterns). Print, color, and glue to a plain exercise book.

Window Suncatcher (All ages)

Color a rainbow page with bold saturated colors, laminate it or cover both sides with clear contact paper, and hang it in a window. In direct sunlight the laminated colors diffuse light in a way that is visually very close to stained glass. Most effective on pages with a white or uncolored background around the arc.
