See the Colors Before You Print

Every pumpkin coloring page in this collection shows a small full-color reference image beside the printable outline. Check the reference before you start so you know exactly which shades to use — particularly useful for fall pages where the difference between a bright Halloween orange pumpkin and a deeper harvest gold can completely change the mood of the finished page.

How to Color Pumpkins — Color Guide

A standard pumpkin uses three tones of orange to create the curved segment look that makes a pumpkin instantly recognizable:

  • Base color: A warm mid-orange — Crayola “Orange” or “Outrageous Orange.” Apply this across the full pumpkin body.
  • Shadow in the grooves: A deeper reddish-orange or burnt orange — Crayola “Burnt Orange” or “Mahogany” — pressed firmly along the vertical groove lines between each pumpkin segment. This is what creates the three-dimensional rounded look.
  • Highlight on the ridges: Leave a small vertical strip of lighter or uncolored paper at the center of each segment where the light would hit. Even without a white pencil, the contrast between the groove shadow and the uncolored ridge creates a convincing round shape.
  • Stem: Dark brown or olive green — Crayola “Brown” or “Olive Green.” Add a thin darker line along one edge of the stem for depth.
  • Leaves and vines: Medium green with a darker green along the midrib vein of each leaf. Curling vine tendrils can stay the same green or go slightly lighter.

Jack-o-Lantern Colors

For a carved jack-o-lantern, the carved-out sections (eyes, nose, mouth) need to suggest either a candle glow from inside or empty darkness:

  • Glowing version: Color the carved openings in bright yellow or golden yellow, with a thin ring of orange around the inside edge blending into the yellow — this creates the candle-glow-from-inside effect. The pumpkin body itself gets a deeper orange than usual since the glow makes it look lit.
  • Dark version: Leave the carved sections white (blank paper) or color them dark grey to suggest empty holes. Use a darker, less saturated orange on the body.
  • Candle at the base: If the page shows a candle inside, color the flame yellow-white at the center blending to orange at the edges, and add a thin black wick.

Fall Harvest Pumpkins

Fall and harvest scenes often include multiple pumpkins alongside other seasonal elements:

  • Pumpkin variety: Not all pumpkins in a patch are the same orange. Use a mix — bright orange for some, a deeper reddish-orange for others, and a pale golden yellow for the occasional White or Cinderella-variety pumpkin. This variety makes patch scenes look more natural.
  • Fall leaves: Warm red, orange, golden yellow, and a few brown ones — mixing all four in the same scene gives the authentic fall look.
  • Scarecrow: Straw hat in tan or light brown, plaid clothing in red-and-brown or blue-and-brown check, straw stuffing in light yellow at the cuffs and collar.
  • Haystacks: Light golden yellow with slightly darker brown streaks for individual hay strands.

Pumpkin Pie Colors

  • Pie filling: A warm cinnamon brown — Crayola “Brown” with a touch of “Orange” mixed in gives the right spiced-pumpkin tone. The filling should be slightly darker at the edges where it meets the crust.
  • Pie crust: Light golden tan — Crayola “Tan” or “Peach” for the main crust, with a slightly darker brown along the crimped edge and any browned peaks.
  • Whipped cream: Leave white (blank paper) or use the lightest possible grey to suggest shadow folds in the cream without actually coloring it — the paper white is the most effective whipped cream.

8 Pumpkin Facts Kids Will Find Genuinely Interesting

  1. Pumpkins are technically a fruit, not a vegetable. Botanically, a pumpkin is a fruit because it develops from a flower and contains seeds. The confusion comes from the fact that we treat it like a vegetable in cooking — but your pumpkin pie is technically a fruit pie.
  2. The record pumpkin weighed over 1,200 kg. The world record for the heaviest pumpkin, set in 2023, exceeded 1,247 kg (2,749 lbs) — heavier than a small car. These giant competition pumpkins are a specific variety grown with enormous amounts of water and fertilizer, and they grow up to 25 kg per day at peak growth.
  3. Pumpkins are 90% water. Despite their solid, heavy appearance, a pumpkin’s flesh is almost entirely water. This is why pumpkins are relatively low in calories despite their large size.
  4. Jack-o-lanterns originally used turnips, not pumpkins. The Irish tradition of carving lanterns from vegetables started with turnips and beets. When Irish immigrants came to America in the 1800s, they discovered that pumpkins were far easier to carve — and the Halloween pumpkin tradition as we know it was born.
  5. Every part of a pumpkin is edible. The flesh, seeds, skin, leaves, and flowers of a pumpkin plant can all be eaten. Roasted pumpkin seeds are one of the most nutritious snack foods, and pumpkin flowers are a popular ingredient in Mexican cuisine.
  6. Pumpkins grow on every continent except Antarctica. They are one of the most geographically widespread crops in the world, grown in climates as different as tropical Southeast Asia and the cooler zones of North America and Europe.
  7. The Pilgrims may have made the first American pumpkin pie — in a pumpkin shell. An early American recipe for “pumpion” involved hollowing out a pumpkin, filling it with cream, spices, and eggs, then baking the whole thing. The pumpkin shell was the pie dish.
  8. Illinois grows more pumpkins for commercial use than any other US state. Roughly 90–95% of all pumpkins processed into canned pumpkin in the United States come from Illinois — meaning the pumpkin pie filling in most American homes started as an Illinois pumpkin.

Creative Ways to Use Pumpkin Coloring Pages

Pumpkin Design Planner Before Carving

Print a blank pumpkin outline and use it to sketch and test a carved face design before picking up a carving knife. Draw several different face options on separate copies — goofy, scary, classic — and let the family vote on the best one before committing. Much easier to erase a pencil sketch than to undo a carve.

5 Little Pumpkins Classroom Set

Print five pumpkin pages and have each child in a group color one pumpkin — use the classic nursery rhyme (“5 little pumpkins sitting on a gate”) as the activity’s theme. Arrange the five finished pumpkins on a wall display with the rhyme lines printed below each one. A complete October classroom decoration that every child contributed to.

Pumpkin Patch Fall Bulletin Board

Print multiple pumpkin patch scene pages and several individual pumpkin pages. Color them all, cut out the individual pumpkins, and layer them over the patch scenes to create a full three-dimensional-looking fall bulletin board. The layered paper pumpkins give genuine depth to the display.

Personalized Pumpkin Name Tag

Print a simple blank pumpkin outline for each child and have them write their name in large letters inside the pumpkin shape before coloring it. Use as a classroom name tag, a place card for a fall dinner, or a trick-or-treat bag label. Quick, personal, and seasonal.

Pumpkin Life Cycle Science Project Cover

The pumpkin life cycle coloring page makes a natural cover page or visual element for a plant science report or project. Color the four stages, label them, and use it as a diagram within a school project on plant growth cycles.
