See the Colors Before You Print

Every owl page in this collection shows a small full-color reference image alongside the printable outline. Owls come in some of the most beautiful natural color combinations of any bird — the barn owl’s ghostly white and golden-buff, the snowy owl’s pure white with dark speckles, the great horned owl’s rich warm brown barring. The reference image shows you the real colors so you can choose to stay realistic or go in a completely different creative direction.

How to Color Owls — Color Guide for Kids and Adults

Barn Owl Colors — The Classic White Owl

The barn owl is the most recognizable owl in the world and one of the most satisfying to color because its palette is so distinctive:

  • Face (facial disc): Pure white or very pale grey — the heart-shaped face is the barn owl’s most striking feature. Leave it almost entirely white, with only the faintest grey shadow around the eyes.
  • Top of head, wings, and back: Warm golden buff — a mix of orange-yellow and pale brown. Crayola “Goldenrod” or “Tan” works well. Add fine light brown speckle marks across the golden areas — just small dots and dashes to suggest the feather pattern.
  • Belly and chest: White or very pale cream, sometimes with tiny brown speckle dots.
  • Eyes: Completely dark — almost black. Unlike most owls, the barn owl has dark eyes with no visible iris color. A tiny white highlight dot in each eye brings them to life.
  • Beak: Pale ivory or cream — very light, not the yellow beak of a cartoon owl.

Great Horned Owl Colors — The Classic Brown Owl

The great horned owl is what most people picture when they think “owl” — the large brown owl with ear tufts:

  • Body: Rich warm brown as the base, with horizontal darker brown barring (stripes) across the chest and belly. The barring is the most important detail — alternate between the base brown and a darker chocolate brown to create the striped pattern.
  • Facial disc: Rusty orange-brown surrounding the face, with a bold black border around the outer edge of the disc.
  • Ear tufts: Same dark brown as the darkest body feathers — these are the distinctive “horns” that give the owl its name.
  • Eyes: Large and vivid yellow — this is the most striking color contrast on a great horned owl. Use a bright warm yellow for the iris and a solid black pupil. The yellow eyes against the brown face are what makes this owl look so intense and alert.
  • Throat patch: A white patch just below the beak, clearly visible against the brown chest.

Snowy Owl Colors — The White Arctic Owl

The snowy owl is the most dramatic owl to color because of its extreme contrast:

  • Female/juvenile: White base with bold dark brown or black bar markings across the wings, back, and top of the head. The markings look like stripes and spots — apply them carefully with a dark brown pencil over the white paper.
  • Male (pure white): Adult male snowy owls can be almost completely white with only very faint markings — leave the page mostly as white paper, adding only the faintest grey shadow beneath the wings and along the belly fold.
  • Eyes: Vivid bright yellow — the yellow eyes of a snowy owl against a white face are the most striking feature. Use the brightest yellow you have.
  • Beak and talons: Dark grey or near-black, both partially hidden by the thick white facial feathers.
  • Background tip: A snowy owl page looks spectacular with a pale blue or pale grey background suggesting an Arctic sky — the white owl against a pale background reads more clearly than white against white paper.

Fun Owl Facts Kids Love to Share

owl facts illustration
  1. Owls cannot move their eyes. Unlike humans, owls have fixed eyes — they cannot roll or move them side to side. To look at something, an owl has to turn its entire head. To make up for this, owls can rotate their heads up to 270 degrees in either direction — almost all the way around.
  2. Owls are almost completely silent when they fly. The leading edge of an owl’s flight feathers has a special comb-like structure that breaks up the sound of air moving over the wing. A flying owl makes almost no sound — this is what makes them such effective nighttime hunters. You would not hear one coming.
  3. A group of owls is called a parliament. The collective noun for owls comes from the medieval legend that owls were symbols of wisdom and were believed to meet in formal councils to make decisions — like a parliament. Other collective nouns for owls include a “wisdom” and a “study.”
  4. Owls swallow their prey whole and then spit out the bones. After eating a mouse or small bird, an owl’s stomach compresses all the indigestible parts — bones, fur, and feathers — into a tight oval pellet that the owl regurgitates whole. Scientists study these owl pellets to learn exactly what owls eat in different habitats.
  5. Barn owls are one of the most widespread birds on Earth. The common barn owl is found on every continent except Antarctica — it lives in more countries than almost any other bird species. It is also one of the most effective natural pest controllers — a single barn owl family eats approximately 1,000 mice per year.
  6. Snowy owls can live in temperatures of minus 50°C. The snowy owl’s feathers are among the densest and most insulating of any bird — they even have feathers covering their beak and the tops of their feet. They breed in the high Arctic during the continuous daylight of summer.
  7. The smallest owl in the world fits in your hand. The elf owl of North America and Mexico is about the size of a sparrow — 12–14 cm tall and weighing about 40 grams. The largest owl is the Blakiston’s fish owl of Russia and Japan, which can have a wingspan of nearly 2 metres.
  8. Owls have been symbols of wisdom for over 2,500 years. In ancient Greek mythology, the little owl (Athena noctua) was the companion of Athena, goddess of wisdom. The owl appeared on the silver coins of Athens. The association between owls and wisdom has continued ever since — which is why the “wise old owl” is one of the oldest character types in children’s stories and fables.

Creative Ways Kids Can Use Owl Coloring Pages

Make an Owl Puppet Show

Color two or three owl pages — a big owl, a baby owl, and a Halloween owl work well together. Cut each owl out carefully around the outline. Glue each one onto a wooden popsicle stick or a straw. Now you have owl hand puppets. Make up a story together — where do the owls live? What do they eat? What happens on Halloween night? This activity turns a coloring page into a 30-minute imaginative play session.

Owl Fact Bookmark

Color the wise owl with books and glasses page. When it’s finished, cut it into a tall narrow strip about 5cm wide — tall enough to stick out of the top of a book. Write one owl fact from the list above on the back. This becomes a personalized bookmark your child made themselves and can share with friends. Each friend gets a different owl fact — a reason to make more than one.

Fluffy Cotton Ball Owl

Print a simple large owl outline. Color the beak, eyes, branch, and background as normal — but instead of coloring the body, glue small pieces of pulled-apart cotton wool or cotton balls over the owl’s body and wings to create real texture. The cotton gives the finished owl a genuinely fluffy, three-dimensional look that looks impressive displayed on a wall. Works especially well for the baby owl page.

Nighttime Window Scene

Color the owl-at-night or Halloween owl page with a very dark sky — deep purple or navy. Cut around the outer border of the page. Tape it against a window with the colored side facing inward. During the day, light shines through the page and the colors glow — particularly striking if you used dark blues and purples for the sky and bright yellow for the moon. A simple homemade stained glass effect that costs nothing.

Owl Family Story Book

Print the owl family page, the baby owl page, and the owl in flight page. Color all three. Fold three pieces of plain paper in half and staple them together to make a small book. Glue one owl page at the top of each double page spread and write a story underneath — where the family lives, what the baby owls are learning, where the parent owl goes at night. Your child has written and illustrated their own book.

Print setting: High Quality for the realistic barn owl, great horned owl, snowy owl, and mandala pages — fine feather lines and mandala detail need a sharp print. Standard quality works fine for simple and cartoon owl pages.

Classroom tip: Print one simple owl outline per student on standard quality — they print cleanly and quickly in large batches. For a display, printing at slightly larger than A4 (if your printer supports A3) makes the finished owls more impressive on a wall.

A group of owls is called a parliament because of the medieval belief that owls were symbols of wisdom and gathered in formal councils — like a parliament — to make decisions.
