How to Color Penguin Coloring Pages — Color Guide for Every Style
The Classic Penguin Tuxedo
The tuxedo pattern is what makes a penguin instantly recognizable. Getting it right takes only three colors:
- Back, head, and outer wings: Solid black or very dark charcoal grey. Press firmly and fill completely — the darker this area, the more the white belly contrasts against it.
- Belly and chest: Leave completely white — the blank paper is the correct color. Do not color this area at all.
- The boundary line between black and white: This curved edge running from the chin down both sides of the chest is the most important line to color neatly. Use a sharp black pencil or the tip of a black crayon along this edge.
- Beak: Orange or golden yellow. Emperor penguins have an orange-pink beak; cartoon penguins typically use a simple orange triangle.
- Feet: Orange or coral — match them to the beak color.
- Eyes: Solid black with one tiny white highlight dot. Small but important — it makes the eye look shiny and alive rather than a flat black spot.
Making a Plain Penguin Page Look Vibrant
Since the body is mostly black and white, all the color opportunity is in everything surrounding the penguin:
- Scarf and accessories: Go completely creative — bright red scarf, striped blue and yellow hat, purple earmuffs. Bold accessories against the black and white body make the finished result eye-catching.
- Background: A pale icy blue behind the penguin makes it stand out dramatically more than white paper. Even a light blue wash across the top half of the page transforms the composition.

- Penguins are birds that cannot fly — but they can outswim most fish. Penguins’ wings evolved into rigid flippers over millions of years. In the water they can reach speeds of up to 25 km/h and can dive to depths of over 500 metres. The gentoo penguin is the fastest swimming bird on Earth.
- Emperor penguins are the only animal that breeds during the Antarctic winter. While every other animal leaves Antarctica during winter, emperor penguins march inland, huddle together in groups of thousands, and balance their eggs on their feet — covered by a warm fold of belly skin — through temperatures of minus 60°C and 200 km/h blizzards.
- Male emperor penguins do all the egg incubating. After the female lays a single egg she returns to the ocean to feed. The male balances the egg on his feet and does not eat for up to 65 days — the entire incubation period — living off body fat reserves.
- Penguins recognize each other by voice, not by sight. In a colony of half a million nearly identical-looking penguins, a parent can find its own chick from hundreds of metres away using the unique call the chick makes — a call it learns before it even hatches.
- Penguins propose with pebbles. Male Adélie and gentoo penguins search for the smoothest pebble they can find and present it to a female. If she accepts it and places it in her nest, they are paired. Pebbles are so valuable in penguin colonies that they are regularly stolen between nests.
- There are 18 species of penguin and none of them live at the North Pole. All penguins live in the Southern Hemisphere. Polar bears live at the North Pole; penguins live at the South Pole. The Galápagos penguin is the northernmost species, living on the equator in the Pacific Ocean.
- The smallest penguin fits in your hands. The little blue penguin of Australia and New Zealand stands just 30–33 cm tall and weighs about 1 kg. The largest, the emperor penguin, stands up to 122 cm and weighs up to 45 kg — as heavy as an adult human.
- Penguins can drink seawater — something that would make a human very sick. A special gland above each eye works like a built-in filter, removing the salt from seawater before it enters their body. The salt comes out through their beak and nose. Without this, they could not survive in the ocean.
